I must admit, i didn’t think that this book was for me. I am a disabled person who has gone on a long journey overcoming my internal ableism. In addition, I have three degrees in the subject. Therefore, I have a dilemma concerning mainstream books on disability. I am glad that they are there but often find that they simply repeat the things which I already know. I thought that this would be one of those books. But, I was wrong. Yes, much of the material, historical events, and ideas were familiar to me. However, the author still managed to introduce me to new models of disability. More importantly, it reminded me that the fight against internal ableism never ends and that I still have a long way to go. It highlighted the areas where I was falling short and the ways that I can improve.
This book is for you, if you feel that you are new to disability issues and unsure how to begin your fight against ableism, it breaks down how ableism effects disabled people, and the rest of society, in a clear and simple manner. It explores how ableism intersects and compounds the other isms. The author shows you your ableism and then takes your hand, giving you ways that you can fight your prejudices and become a active actor in the fight for disability justice.
An exploration of ableism and how we can fight it, this book explores; the history; of ableism, those people who have fought against it, and gives clear instructions for those who wish to continue the fight. This book is a discussion of disability, and ableism, in all their intersectional complexity. It is a clear and concise, well written manifesto. It makes a brilliant guide to creating a better world
